Collar mic for YouTube videos has recently gained a lot of traction. Earlier Collar microphones were often used by news presenters, Talk show hosts, and Interviewers. Collar mics are the most effective mics since they are the ones that are closest to the source of the voice.

Collar mics are used when we don’t want to show the microphone on the screen. You might have seen in many explainer videos like the one by vsause. Mostly when A Roll is shot many prefer the collar mic for audio recording.

Now since everyone is creating videos and all of us want to up the ante of our audio games, collar mics are the first device that comes to mind. The reason is cheaper cost as compared to Studio microphones or shotgun mics.

Though many YouTubers and content creators have shifted from collar mics/Lavalier mics to Studio mics. But they are still a huge hit among the newcomers. Many YouTubers still prefer collar mic as their primary audio recording device.

From the top of my mind, I can remember of is Abhi and Niyu who are still seen rocking the Rode Wireless Go.

I have myself sometimes found the collar mics to be more useful as compared to the studio mics and shotgun mics. In outdoor conditions, many do prefer shotgun mics but I have seen content creators using collar mics as well.

Some of the best usage of collar mic is using it directly with the DSLR while driving or using it for the outside shoot.

How to use Collar mic?

There are basically two ways to use a collar mic/lavalier microphone. The first one is to directly attach the collar mic to the DSLR or smartphone(whichever device you are using to record video). This way the audio is directly recorded with the video. Instead of the video recorder’s inbuilt audio system, it will record the collar mics audio.

The second method is using a recorder. This is the standard method used by content creators. Basically a collar mic with a receiver. You keep the recorder in your pocket with ht collar mic attached and at the beginning of the recording, you sync the audio of the video recorder and collar mic then later change it in post.

The second method helps to record very high-quality audio. I had the zoom H1 recorder which is the older version recorder. If you are buying a recorder in 2020 I would suggest Zoom H1N it is the best in the market currently.

Now that we have understood how the different types of collar mic works let’s look into the best collar mics for youtube. Below we have mentioned some of the best collar mics for mobile and wireless collar mic for creating youtube videos.

Best Collar Mic for YouTube videos

Boya BYM1 Collar Mic

boya bym1 collar mic for youtube

Boya BYM1 is the best collar mic for youtube. Every YouTuber who started small or had budget constraints while staring with youtube used Boya lavalier mic. Even I bought the mic recently to experiment with different styles of audio devices.

I had to say that I was really impressed by the quality of audio that the Boya lavalier mic offers. The Boya BYM1 has to be the best mic for creating youtube videos for beginners. The mic does not have the best audio quality from all the mics listed in this article, but it is the best value for money mic for youtube videos.

I didn’t really expect such great quality of audio with such a cheap price of the device. If you are just getting started with creating youtube videos then this mic is the best to get started with.

If you are Luddite and not really interested in understanding audio technicalities then this is the best plug and play mic for creating videos. You can also plug the mic into your smartphones and start recording.

You need to have an audio recording app on your smartphone and then clip the mic onto your shirt/T-shirt and you are ready to go.

I have rather used it by directly plugging the boya collar mic into the DSLR that I shoot from. I use this setup when I am at home. But when I am shooting a travel or food video I just use the smartphone as a recorder and record my voice with the collar mic and sync the video and audio in post.

Rode Smart Lav + Microphone

Now though smart lav+ has the rode microphone brand name attached to it, but it sometimes does not live up to mark.

Even while seeing its specification on amazon it more like a anwer to the drawbacks then its feature. The sound quality is really good but you might need to add more money and get more accessories along with the collar mic itself.

Some of its drawbacks include a short collar mic cable. You might need a Rode SC1 6 meter TRRS to TRRS extension cable to increase the total length of the microphone.

The second one is not all devices are compatible with rode lavalier microphones like the GoPros. Since GoPros use TRS inputs and the rode microphone is TRRS. SO you need TRs to TRRS adapter to work with the incompatible device.

After reading this many switch to other collar mics. But some are really fans of the rode brand and stick with it.

Rode Wireless Go

rode wireless go collar mic for youtube

The rode wireless go is one of the few wireless collar mic available in India. Many of the YouTubers and vloggers have shifted to Rode Wireless go as their daily driver. Sony ECMCS3 Collar Microphone

Sony ECMCS3 collar mic is quoted to be the best collar mic for youtube. Many Youtubers have vouched their opinion on the sony collar mic, The microphone is at the same range as the Rode Smart Lav+ but is said to have superior recording quality as compared to the Rode.

Though looking at price to performance Boya collar mic might have a slight edge but the Sony collar mics are known for their durability and high quality product. Many YouTubers and content creators have used the device for more than 2 years and have not seen any drop in quality of audio.

One of the biggest problems with Rode SmartLav+ was it should be close to the source of sound. So it means you have to clip it at the top of your shirt. But this is not the case with sony Collar mic, You can even keep the sony lavalier microphone on the desk and start recording.

This sony collar mic has a really good audio quality. Though you might need some post audio editing once you are done with recording.

Shure MVL/A Omnidirectional Microphone

Audio-Technica ATR3350 Microphone

audio technica collar mic for youtube

Audio Technica creates studio-grade headphones and microphones which are market favorites. I have personally used the Audio Technica headphones and these are headphones that are standards of many recording studios.

But when we talk about microphones the company is a little behind in the lavalier department. Don’t get me wrong they have some really amazing cardioid condenser microphone like the Audio Technica ATR 2500X USB cardioid microphone. But they lag a little behind in the collar mic department.

Disclaimer: After Reviewing the Product was not available on Amazon. Hence we have mentioned links to its alternative Maona Au100

Maona is another microphone company which has many budget microphone under its belt. The Maona microphone is quite famous among the new YouTubers. It is also dubbed as the best budget microphone for youtube.

Though the maona collar mic is a good start for beginners, definitely not a long term mic. The Maona Au 400 is a great collar mic for youtube beginners. But for the cost that maona is offered, I would say this is a great pick.

A lavalier microphone comes with 6 meters of cable, 2 button batteries where 1 battery is extra, a 3.5 mm gold plated adapter for laptop & smartphones along with a 6.5 mm adaptor for DSLR cameras, A metal clip to fix the condenser mic.

The collar mic has a very good background noise reduction tech and provides a great quality of sound. The build is sturdy but a little lightweight which might make it feel unbranded. But overall the device is excellent for the price.

The only downside that I found was the sensitivity, it is too high. If the sensitivity would have been a little less, then this might be the perfect budget collar mic for youtube.
