In 2014 we witnessed one of the biggest acquisition by Facebook where Facebook bought Whatsapp for $19 billion dollars. Both  the founders of WhatsApp Jan Koum and Brian Acton became billionaires. Kaum continues to lead the company, but Acton left the company earlier this year to start his own foundation.

But in wake of recent events where Facebook is said to provide user data to one of the biggest data analytics company Cambridge analytica. Which indirectly helped Donald Trump will the election.

With the recent Twitter trend of #deletefacebook Brian Acton tweeted in support of the campaign and said that it was time and added #deletefacebook in the tweet. Not only Acton but other former Facebook executive also joined in support of the campaign.

It is unclear with Acton’s thoughts about Facebook and his own app(Whatsapp). But it was interesting to see that Acton invested $50 million into Signal, an independent and safer alternative to WhatsApp.

What’s app always worked with the Motto of serving it’s users and not trying to use there data and put ads. But now this might not be the case as Facebook is using the data to optimise user performance and run ads related to users Whatsapp data.

People tend to overlook the role of Cambridge Analytica (big data analytics company) in the victory of Trump which helped him and media to tailor persuasive speeches and propaganda based on the psychographics of its population analysing big data linked to their social share and data.

Brian making such a statement at public real makes us think, How safe is our Personal Data? With most of the social media like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp controlled by Facebook. How easy it is for these company with these much data to manipulate people.

User privacy is one of the biggest challenges that we face in 21st century. It is a data driven world, the one with data is the one with power.
